The Best Chewy M&M Cookie Recipe
If you love soft and chewy M&M cookies, this recipe is for you! These homemade M&M cookies have slightly crisp edges, soft and chewy centers and are loaded with colorful M&M candies.
They are basically the perfect classic cookie.
And this M&M cookie recipe has been in my family for years!
My Favorite Chewy M&M Cookies
Whenever I think of M&M cookies, I think of this recipe. I also think of my brother, Tom, because these have always been his favorite cookies. My mom made this M&M cookie recipe when we were growing up, and now it's one of those recipes I make over and over again for my own family.
There is just something about a classic M&M cookie. It's similar to a chocolate chip cookie, but this recipe uses more brown sugar for that soft, chewy texture and is loaded with M&M candies instead of chocolate chips.
Basically, happiness in cookie form.
This recipe is also included in my Urban.Apron Cookie Book because it is truly one of my tried-and-true cookie recipes. The book is filled with my favorite cookie recipes that I actually make in my own kitchen, from classic family recipes like these M&M cookies to some of my favorite bakery-style cookies.
Why You'll Love This M&M Cookie Recipe
There are a few reasons I've been making these cookies for years:
Soft and chewy centers: The extra brown sugar gives these cookies the best chewy texture.
Slightly crisp edges: Bake them just until the edges begin to turn golden brown.
Loaded with M&M's: You get colorful candy-coated chocolate in every bite.
Easy to make: This is a simple, no-fuss cookie recipe.
Perfect for parties: M&M cookies are always a crowd pleaser!
These are especially great for birthday parties, family gatherings, holidays or anytime you need an easy cookie recipe to bring somewhere.
Ingredients for Chewy M&M Cookies
You only need a few basic baking ingredients to make these homemade M&M cookies:
Unsalted butter: I use two sticks, or one cup, of unsalted butter.
White sugar: Adds sweetness and helps give the cookies their slightly crisp edges.
Dark brown sugar: The star of a chewy cookie! This recipe uses more brown sugar than white sugar to help create a soft and chewy texture. (light brown sugar will work too, I just prefer the dark!)
Eggs: You will need two large eggs.
Pure vanilla extract: I always use pure vanilla extract when baking.
Baking soda: Helps the cookies rise and spread.
Salt: Balances the sweetness of the cookies.
All-purpose flour: I use 2 3/4 cups of all-purpose flour.
M&M candies: I use about 1 1/2 cups of M&M's, or one 10-ounce bag. Save a few extra M&M's to press into the tops of the cookie dough balls before baking!
The Best Chewy M&M Cookie Recipe
2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1 cup dark brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. water
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups M&M’s (I use one 10-ounce bag)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a mixer, cream together the butter and sugars. Add in the eggs and water and mix to combine. Then, cream in the vanilla extract.
Add in the baking soda, salt and flour and mix until fully combined and flour is mixed into the dough.
Add in the M&M’s and stir until just combined. I save some extra to top the dough balls with the M&M’s.
Scoop dough on cookie sheet and top each dough ball with a few M&M’s.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the cookies are slightly becoming golden brown on the edges.
My Tips for Soft and Chewy M&M Cookies
My biggest tip is do not overbake the cookies! I take these out of the oven when the edges are just starting to become golden brown. The centers may still look slightly soft, but the cookies will continue to set as they cool on the baking sheet.
I also always save some M&M's to press into the tops of the cookie dough balls before baking. It makes the finished cookies look so much prettier and gives you even more M&M's on top.
Because more chocolate is rarely the problem.
How to Store M&M Cookies
Store your baked M&M cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They are best enjoyed within a few days.
You can also freeze the baked cookies in a freezer-safe container and thaw them at room temperature when you're ready to enjoy one.
